Dutch Haven Barn Sign - Route 340, Pennsylvania

I think the designer of this sign got a bit carried away, but it looks great on a postcard! This sign was on Route 340, 8 miles east of Lancaster, between Bird in Hand and Intercourse, Pennsylvania.

I especially like the hex signs. Although this shop advertised "Amish Stuff," hex signs are not associated with the Amish. Hex signs are a form of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art practiced by the "Fancy Dutch."

Shoo-fly pie is a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch fluffy molasses pie. Dutch Haven on Route 30 east of Lancaster claims to be the place that made shoo-fly pie famous, and they have an online store where you can order this pie.

  1. Well that sign would definitely attract me to shop. I think I stop at every tourist spot just because when a child my Dad would say "you don't want to stop there."

  2. This is one filled to the brim with local color. My parents were like Judy’s, and they never would stop for me to go in amy of the wayside tourist spots. I think they are funky and so full of personality.

  3. Since I didn't know at first that "Intercourse" was a town, the sign gave me pause, maps to brothels?

  9. "Amish Stuff" and "Intercourse Maps".... that sign must have gotten a lot of folk to slam on the brakes!

  15. The sign would be a magnet to the eyes. You couldn't drive pat it without looking. Lancaster PA used to be a get away shopping weekend for me and the wife.

  16. I had the same reaction as Martha Z. I had to read the text to understand. I'm amazed that town has not voted to change its name. I can just hear the jokes the folks living there must be subjected to by outsiders.

Thanks for the visit to my rusty old sign.

  17. I love this blog! I should put you on my google reader, so that I see each new post as it comes up. But on the other hand, it is really fun to read a week's worth of your posts at once. It's like browsing around at a very good paper antiques show. Love it -- you do all the work and show us all the best finds ;>) Thanks.
