Ridgeback Dog Stamp - Republic of South Africa

This maximum card showing the Rhodesian Ridgeback dog was issued by the Republic of South Africa in 1991. Unlike most dog stamps, this stamp was not part of a series. It was issued to mark the centenary of the SAKU (South African Kennel Union). The caption on the back is "Animal Breeding in South Africa."

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is distinguished by the ridge of hair along its back, running in the opposite direction to the rest of its coat. It consists of a fan-like area formed by two whorls of hair and tapers from behind the shoulders down to the level of the hips. The ridge is usually about 2 inches (5 cm) in width at its widest point.

Quite a few countries have issued stamps picturing the Rhodesian Ridgeback. There is a page of Rhodesian Ridgeback Stamps on the animalstamps.com website.

I am participating in Sunday Stamps at Viridian's Postcard Blog

  1. This stamp gives a good view of the bizarre hair raising trait!

  2. You've got a nicely themed dog weekend:-) I've just been stunned by reading on your link that the Ridgeback was "used for hunting lions" they must have hearts of lions to do that. What a dog.

  6. I love the card with the mother and puppy. I was always led to believe the ridgeback was quite a fierce dog.
