Fans & Flowers Greetings

Fans, often combined with flowers, were common motifs on early twentieth century greeting postcards. A fan shape could serve as background, frame, or both.

I even have two postcards in my "cat collection" that include fans.

Fans are most common on everyday and birthday greetings, but they are also found on holiday postcards.

Next, and last, is a novelty postcard made up of a variety of materials and add-ons.

  3. I couldn't wait for you to post -- I just knew you'd have some beautiful cards to show us. The last one looks quilted - I can almost feel it.

  4. I like the one at the end best. "Hearty Greetings" seems rather strange written on a card with a lovely fan.

  5. All the postcard fans are lovely, but my favorite is the two kitties on the stationary fan surrounded by all those little blue flowers. So cute.

  6. I am with Sherri. Just wondering how you sort them so that you can find them easily?

The Christmas card is my favourite.

  7. The pictures on so many postcards were so beautifully sentimental. Certainly a lot of work must have gone into illustrating them in the first place.

  8. Excellent choices. Do we have a contemporary equivalent for a lady's fan? Hand bags? Sun glasses? Cell phones? Nothing I can think of that would merit a postcard.

    1. It would be hard to find a contemporary greeting postcard on any subject now.

  9. The art work is detailed and pretty. Fans must have been popular or they wouldn't have been included.

  10. Yes, it is a good theme for card collectors isn't it, although the postcard collector in my family - Great Uncle Fowler - didn't seem to go for fans. Lovely cards, what a marvelous collection you have.

  13. What lovely cards. You've got me wondering if I have any vintage postcards with fans on them. I think the Christmas cats are my favorite.
