Candy Sweeties - Fat Emma & Pie Face

This is a salesman advance card printed on a U. S. government postal card. Fat Emma, made by the Pendergast Candy Company of Minneapolis in the 1920s, was one of the classic American Candy bars of the past. Pie Face was her male companion. Fat Emma is included on a list of "Ten Immortals" by Ray Broekel (a candy bar historian) in his article "Land of the Candy Bar." It was the first candy bar to use the type of nougat center later used by Mars in Milky Way. This nougat resulted from using too much egg white in the recipe which made it fluffy and thicker than expected (thus making Emma "fat"). The nougat became known as Minnesota or Minneapolis nougat.

  1. This is just fascinating candy history! Although any mascot labeled FAT would certainly deter me from buying it: I hate this whole getting older and having to watch what I eat thing!

  2. I loved Fat Emma and Pie Face as a kid and right until I could no longer find it. I often think about how wonderful the taste was and it brings back very happy memories of when I was young, footloose and fancy free. What a fasinating candy history!

  5. Wow would I love a Fat Emma right now. I remember buying them at the candy store when I was a kid. The store had nothing but candy, all kinds of licorice. Pipes and plugs, and shoestrings. Five Star bars were another fav of mine.

  8. Fat Emma and Pie Fat bars at a dime apiece were my favourites back in the '50's growing up in Flin Flon, Manitoba available after a 5 minute run to " Sue's Candy Bar" store on 3rd Ave. Have often wondered why they are no longer available...
