PFF - Bear Panhandler at Yellowstone Park

Bears are a popular subject on postcards from some of the national parks. My favorites are the ones that also picture old cars like this 1955 Ford station wagon. This bear is looking for a handout from tourists. Here is the information from the back of the postcard:

BEAR "PANHANDLER"
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Renowned as a refuge for a wide variety of wildlife, the most often seen and the most popular are the "hobo" Black Bears who are constantly looking for a "hand-out." Though tame, they are very dangerous as they are extremely quick and agile and when full grown averages 250 pounds. For the visitors own protection it is illegal to feed them.

  1. Oh, my heavens! I remember when I was a kid we went to Yellowstone park. I saw the bear and jumped four feet from the picnic table to the old stationwagon. I climbed into the back--where the bear clawed at the glass to get in. We left in a hurry. I think we did go back for the remains of our lunch and my doll.

    lol Thanks for the memories!

  2. The card is great in so many ways, not least of which is the station wagon itself.

  4. Wonderful card. That poor woman in the front seat! When I was staying over at the Yossemite Park once, I met such a black bear one night when I was walking in my pyama to a toilet. It was quite a surprise - for both of us. Happy PFF!

  5. I wonder what she said to the driver when he got in after taking the photograph. Love the bear and the car.

  8. I don't think I would want to be that close to one of those big furry fellows. Cute picture.

  9. I've never seen a bear in the wild, but they are large creatures. this reminds me of Yogi Bear and the picnic baskets.

  11. Whoa, that is some closeness there between man and beast. Great car, too. Happy PFF.

  12. This gives me the shivers. There's probably some phobia that describes "unusually strong fear of bears", and I have it! The feature in my nightmares too often! Cool card though.
