The title on this vintage postcard is Bear Raiding Picnic Table, Yellowstone National Park. I've never been to Yellowstone or encountered a bear, but I do have some vintage picnic things.
I won this vintage Thermos picnic set in a contest in 1970. I never found it very useful, and the only reason I saved it is because I won it. It was a prize in a Crystal Sugar contest to name a vacation home. I would have been much happier if I had won the vacation home. The Thermoses are the kind with glass inside, and the labels are full of instructions of what not to do with them.

My vintage aluminum lawn lounge chair is also something I have had since about 1970. That chair has been used every year. I think it is much more convenient and durable than the new ones you can buy now. It originally had alternating strips of green and white webbing. I put new webbing on it sometine in the 1990s.
I'm participating in Vintage Thingie Thursday
I love that postcard and your winnings. I still have part of a corningware set that I won when I was about ten - Yes I was doing soo much cooking then :). That lounge chair brings back so many memories!
ReplyDeleteI have been to this park as well. I am thankful I did not see a bear like this. We did see a few but not like they used to be.
ReplyDeleteWe had that same Thermos kit with the same plaid bag when I was younger. I have a lawn chair like yours and the webbing is starting to come apart- where did you find the new stuff and was it difficult to repair? Happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteI was going to say, that they used to sell webbing to replace the old stuff, I can still remember my dad doing that very thing! love your vintage picnic items, and the postcard is adorable!!! Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteOh my! I am from the same era, so plaid and thermos means a picnic.
ReplyDeleteWell I'd definitely take the picnic set over the bear!
ReplyDeleteRemember those lawnchairs well. The metal got very very hot in the sun. I probably have some scars from getting burned on them. That bear postcard is cute.
ReplyDeleteThose chairs last 4ever! I too have some.
ReplyDeleteI love your vintage picnic things, I'm glad you kept them.
Thanks for sharing :)
What a cool chair and your prize thermos kit. The bear postcard is lovely.
ReplyDeleteThat postcard is funny but scary at the same time. That's a BIG bear.
ReplyDeleteLove the lounge chair. The old ones are the best and the webbing can be replaces forever. I love the color on yours.
You need a wicker picnic basket to put all your wonderful old thermos items in.
Happy Camping without bears....
We're in the same boat. The closest I've ever come to the bear-raiding scene is watching Yogi and Boo Boo scarf down a few pickanic baskets (<-- good ol' Yogi-speak!) in Jellystone Park.
ReplyDeleteLove the thermos set! I call its pattern "Barbie Plaid." The neighbor girl, who I played Barbies with when I was a smitch, had a Midge who owned a small, round red cooler like that. "Midge" said it once belonged to Barbie, till she got her hands on it. Midge was wicked, I tell ya. All in all, I like picnic sets like that. Not so much Midge, though.
P.S. What was the vacation home name you sent in?
WOW that postcard's brilliant - no picnicing in Yellowstone for me ;-) Have a great week.
ReplyDeletemy parents used to have that thermos set.. and the read and black plaid bag end up being our play bag during my childhood time.. thanks for sharing. Happy vTT
ReplyDeleteLove the postcard and your classic plaid picnic set! And I have a "terrific" picnic recipe for you today-right from a 1950s cook booklet :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree-those lounge chairs were the best-comfortable and easy to move around and store!
Your vintage winnings are fabulous!! If I saw that bear I would be tempted to shoo him away from all of those vintage thingies!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Susan and Bentley

I loved the bear card, the picnic things and above all..I just love that chair. I used to have a chair like that and it was so comfy..wish I still had it.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to thank you for your help with my posting problem. I did everything I knew to do..and I believe you're right on the html. Somehow I had to either leave something open..or not close right. I just know it was a mess..it eventually added slashes through every word on my blog.. and when I took off the button to VTT and the html to Coloradolady..the problem cleared up immediately..so whatever I did wrong, I just continued to make that mistake.
Again, thank you for helping me..it was ever so sweet of you to take the time..Happy VTT..have a wonderful weekend..
I think everyone used to have those plaid thermos bottles in the "olden" days! I think it's great that you kept your winnings. I can remember how those webbed strips frayed away and how we fell though the seat. No fun! Thanks for the visit today. Always like to meet a new blogging friend.

What a terrific post card!
ReplyDeleteI remember those old thermoses. I used to carry one to school with me in the 1970's.
Love your vintage picnic things! Great for summertime. Have a great weekend!

Oh I love this postcard! i have been to Yellowstone but have never seen a bear up close there.
ReplyDeleteI also really love the "pic-a-nic" stuff, it reminds me of yogi bear!
by the way i am now following you and would like to extend the invitation to come follow me as well on La Bella Vie:)

I have a similar picnic set. I think I got mine with either S&H Green Stamps or TV Stamps (which were yellow) back in the late 1960s or early 1970s. We used it when we went to the beach early on Sunday mornings. Coffee in one thermos, juice for the kids in the other. We picked up donuts on the way!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great postcard of the bears at Yellowstone. I went there most summers as a kid and could sleep at night in the campground when I heard those bears in the garbage cans. Now I live below Yosemite and a bear will visit now and then.

Nice thingies.
ReplyDeleteMy first school lunchpail was that great red plaid and I went to the same one room school house as my Dad. Hmm, where are those pictures? I feel a post coming on : ).
I love the postcard but it sends a message not to leave food out where bears live. Smile.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have webbed furniture and it was very comfortable. Memories come back with your photo. Thermoses like that are a thing of the past for the most part. They are still useful though. Love that plaid.
Hugs, Jeanne
I'd have to say that the plaid bag seems to be my favorite vintage thingie this Thursday. Oh, how I remember those lawn chairs.
