Pan American World Airways - Mexican Crafts

Pan American World Airways issued this advertising postcard circa 1948. The description is written in three languages: "Skilled silversmiths and expert weavers exhibit their wares in Mexico, on the routes of the Flying Clippers."

A handwritten message on the back says: "Having a wonderful time. Everyone is expecting you down here in July."

TWA Jetstream Aircraft Murals

The Mural Lounges aboard TWA's JETSTREAM* Aircraft (circa 1950s) featured distinctive paintings by Maric Zamparelli, representing a city or nation along TWA's world-wide routes. Each plane in the Jetstream fleet had a different mural subject. The first postcard shows Zamparelli's interpretation of ROME. The second postcard shows CEYLON.

Pan American Clippers - Miami Airport

Here are three postcards dating from the mid-1930s that show the Pan-American Airways Terminal and Flying Clipper Ships in Miami, Florida. On the first postcard, a Clipper is said to be arriving from Jamaica. On the second postcard, passengers are boarding the Caribbean Clipper. On the third postcard, a Clipper is shown in the water and is said to be off to West Indies and South America.

The Caribbean Clipper was a Sikorsky S-40. The plane on the last card was a more advanced Sikorsky S-42. The early clippers were flying boats. They were called “clippers” to link them with the maritime heritage of the ocean liners. At the time runways capable of handling large aircraft were scarce, and the flying boats could provide scheduled passenger service to any city with a sheltered harbor.

Wings Over Central America

The illustration on this postcard is from an original poster painting by Paul George Lawler. The description on the back of the postcard is as follows:

Guatemala City - in the heart of the "Middle continent" - is one of the one hundred sixty-four ports of call in the sixty-one countries and colonies on Pan American's Routes of the Flying Clipper Ships - which link the Three Americas with Europe, Australasia and the Orient - largest air transport system in the world.

I couldn't find any information on Lawler. A couple of other posters he illustrated for Pan American Airways have been reproduced and are available at many online poster websites.

Pan Am produced hundreds of advertising posters. The website everythingPanAm.com has a page devoted to posters with a sampling of different styles from different eras. One of the early posters shown used the art shown on the above postcard. The poster has "Guatemala" printed above the illustration, and "is only one day away/ via Pan American" printed in two lines below the illustration.

Interior of Northwest Orient Airlines DC-6B's

This postcard of the interior of Northwest Orient Airlines DC-6B shows what air travel was like in the 1950s. These well-dressed folks look like they are really enjoying themselves.

The description on the back is as follows:

Northwest Orient airlines is proud of its fleet of DC-6B's. They represent the finest in aviation engineering. Four giant engines with a total of 12,000 horsepower glide you along at over 300 miles per hour. Cabins are pressurized and soundproofed for your comfort.

Postcard Friendship Friday - Air France to Paris

It's time for Postcard Friendship Friday, so let's hop on an Air France plane and go visit Marie at Cpaphilblog.
This lovely Carte Postale is a 1956 poster-style advertising postcard from Air France, "Le plus grand réseau aérien du Monde" or "The world's largest Airline." It is signed by artist E. Lancaster and pictures some of the most famous Paris landmarks.
In the center is the giant Obelisk of Luxor, a gift from Egypt in the 1830s, that once marked the entrance to the Luxor Temple in Egypt. The other landmarks are (clockwise from top left) Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Sacré-Cœur, Notre Dame, and Winged Horse.

Pan American World Airways Clipper Flight Log

This postcard folds in half for mailing. On one side is a route map and information about a 1953 flight of the Clipper Rainbow en route from San Francisco to Honolulu. The other side has space for a mailing address and a message written aloft.

Pan American World Airways operated from 1927 until 1991. It began with a single route from Key West to Havana and was a pioneer in transocean and intercontinental flying.
