The printed greeting on the front of this postcard is Radostné vánoce, which is Merry Christmas in the Czech language. The back is covered with writing in Czech. The message begins with Radostné a štástné, which translates as Joy and happiness or Joyful and happy. The rest of the message is too hard for me to read, but I recognized the date 1949 preceded by v novém Roce (in the New Year).

I especially like this postcard because the doll reminds me of one of my first dolls which was very similar. My doll was named Mabel. I am now guessing that my mother chose that name. I Googled "doll named Mabel" and discovered that there were dolls named Mabel when my mother was young. The card also reminds me of my family's Christmas ornaments, some of which were made in Czechoslovakia.

The size of the pumpkin depicted on this Thanksgiving postcard probably seemed very exaggerated when the card was published in the early 1900s. The world record pumpkin was in the 400 pound range back then. It took until 1990 for the record to pass the 800 pound mark. Since then, the art of growing giant pumpkins has advanced rapidly, with recent records topping 2,000 pounds. (source: GiantPumpkin.com).

See Your Future Husband in a Mirror on Halloween

An unusual old Halloween custom involved taking a candle and looking into a mirror to see your future husband's face. This postcard is one of a series illustrating that tradition. This card appears to show the culmination of the ritual, when the couple has met and kissed.

Mechanical Valentines with Cats

These are mechanical Valentines from my collection of cat Valentines. The "No Baloney" valentine is dated 1944 on the back. Most of the others are probably from the 1940s too, except for the "Licking Cat" which is older and was made in Germany. These cards are made up of two pieces. The pieces are attached with a small grommet that allows one piece to be moved.

Russian New Year Stamps

This is a square (5-3/4" or 14.5cm) postcard showing a collage of Russian New Year stamps. It was printed in Russia in 2013. I received this postcard from Postcrossing earlier this year.

The stamp on the back is one of the set of twelve 2009 Kremlin stamps. This one is the Ryazan Kremlin.

I always try to write postals to the sick people so suppose you are sick now. I have just written a long letter to Mrs Brown and another to Aunt Sarah.

Calendar postcards were one of the types of postcards sent as New Year greetings during the postcard craze of the early twentieth century. Postcard calendars like these are nearly all from the years 1908, 1909, and 1910.

The 1908 and 1909 cards above were sent at an appropriate time with an appropriate message. The 1910 postcard, however, was sent in July with a rather odd message. I think I would find this one insulting. I wonder what the sender's intention was...

These are two New Year Belle postcards made by Whitney. The Belle has a bell for a hat, a January 1 calendar for an apron, and good luck symbols on her skirt (horshoe on the first and swastika on the second).

My favorite Christmas postcards are the ones with children, and these are especially nice ones. They were printed in Germany by P.F.B. and are part of series No. 6493. One was mailed in 1907 and the other in 1908.
