The theme for this month is My Funniest Postcards. Let's have fun with this theme. Pick out your funniest postcards and post them. Different people have different ideas of what is funny; just don't pick anything pornographic or likely to offend others. They can be comics, humorous photos, or whatever you think is REALLY funny.

My funniest postcards are ones that stand out in my mind from hundreds of funny, but forgettable, postcards. I always remember these.

This "Mary and Her Little Lamb" postcard is one of a series of old postcards on this subject. I have a couple of others that aren't quite so funny. This one was mailed in 1908. No publisher is listed.

The theme for this month is Night/Lights. This month I am trying something a little different. Instead of using vintage cards from various places, I am using only recent cards from my city, Minneapolis. I suggest that you use recent cards from your hometown or someplace you have visited recently. I am interested in seeing what the cards from your area are like, and I think other people will be interested too. Include the description on the card, and as much other information as you want. (I found that a couple of my cards didn't have enough description printed on the card, so I had to do some research.)

PFF & Postcard Scavenger Hunt #4 – Handicrafts

I have combined the Postcard Scavenger Hunt posting with my Postcard Friendship Friday post partly so more people will see it and partly so I won't have to squeeze a post in between Vintage Thingies Thursday and Postcard Friendship Friday. I have also increased the size of the PSH logo in the upper left of my blog and given it a caption with the current month's theme. I am hoping this increased visibility will encourage greater participation. Clicking the big PSH logo at the top of the left column links to the original announcement post with instructions.

I thought some people might be interested in the source of the PSH logo. I made it by modifying a postcard that I already had used on my blog Let George Do It.

Here are some HANDICRAFTS postcards from my collection to inspire you.

The University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures at San Antonio. Texas women quilted with scraps of old clothing and sacks, and used corn shucks, cotton or wool for batting. Members of the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild produce beautiful quilts while sharing the history and techniques of their art with visitors. This is a Texas Folklife Festival quilt. (The 2009 Texas Folklife Festival is June 12-14.)

Navajo rug weaver. Navajo rugs are worked on in the Navajo Hogans in winter and outside under a tree in the summer. Wool is sheared from the sheep, sorted amd washed, carded to make fibers line in one direction and worked into a cord which is then dyed to color and then used for weaving. These rugs are made completely of wool and are famed for their beauty and durability.

A Pair of Beauties in the Sunshine City, St. Petersburg, Florida

Tarpon are one of the big fish of Florida. They are usually caught and released. I like the classic attire on this woman, the camera slung over her shoulder, and the fact that she is not a scantily clad pin-up. It looks like the publisher was trying to appeal to both sexes with this postcard.

Minnesota Game Fish: Northern Pike, Black Crappie, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Walleye. Walleye is the Minnesota State Fish.

The 2009 Minnesota fishing opener is this weekend, May 9. I've never been on a fishing trip, but I like all the funny and exaggerated fish postcards. If you are interested in fishing or like videos, be sure to watch the Minnesota fishing video. It's actually quite humorous.

A Pabst Beer advertising card for spring break 1982. Pabst Brewing Company was a famous Milwaukee brewery founded in 1844, but the company no longer owns any breweries. The company is a "virtual brewery" that owns brand names and markets many brands that are actually brewed by other breweries.

Postcard Scavenger Hunt #1 – Dogs

The theme for this month is DOGS. I chose this theme because I read several postcard blogs recently that were about dog postcards. "Dogs" seems like a theme that a lot of people either have already or can find.

There are many different types of dog postcards. Here are a few from my postcard collection to inspire you.

My favorite 1950s-1960s U. S. chrome postcards of dogs are those showing dressed dogs with props and messages. Unfortunately these are much less common than plain portraits of dogs.

Black poodles are my favorite breed of dog because my family had a black standard poodle when I was young. This postcard is made in Denmark and signed by artist Michaelis.

"H.M. the Queen with the Duke of Edinburgh at Windsor Castle." This is a real photo postcard published by Valentine's of a young Queen Elizabeth and a little Corgi, a breed of dog that I always associate with her.

Announcing the Postcard Scavenger Hunt

There will be no Postcard Scavenger Hunt this month. It has been hard to find postcard topics that many people will have and be interested in, and there has not been much participation most months.

Each month (usually on the first Thursday Friday of the month) I will post a theme for the Postcard Scavenger Hunt. You are invited to place one or more of your postcards illustrating that theme on your blog and link to your blog posting via the Mister Linky widget. Please leave a comment, and if Mister Linky is not working, put your link in your comment.

You don't have to post right away. The deadline is really at the end of the month so people can have plenty of time. You can also submit the permalink to one of your older posts on the theme. Occasionally, I may add a link to a post I have seen that fits the current theme.

It is recommended that you use the permanent link for your post, not your home page url. By using the permanent link, your posting will be easier for others to find. Other ways you can help others find your posting are to copy my title (e.g. “Postcard Scavenger Hunt #1 – Dogs”) and to use “postcard scavenger hunt” as a label or tag.

I found this 1968 Russian postcard when I looked through my box of comic postcards for something related to hunting. I love the way this dog is LOL! A translation is penciled on the back: "To run for a hare is not my hobby." I studied Russian in school but I can't remember much except the Russian alphabet. I wish I still had my Russian dictionary. The last word looks like "profile" spelled in Russian characters, and "profile" actually is the literal translation I found on LangtoLang Multilingual Dictionary. Interestingly, that website translates "hobby" by just spelling it in the equivalent Russian characters. I think in English we would say it's not my "job."
